Robert Eggers gives an intense and dark take on the 1922 classic. The horror film stars Bill Skarsgard as Count Orlok with other stars such as Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, and other notable actors.
The official description from Focus Features “Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.”
In the teaser, it doesn’t reveal Nosferatu’s face. Skarsgard, who previously played Pennywise in the film series, worked with an opera singer to lower the pitch in his voice. With his interview with Esquire, he admits, “It was like conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me.” He was isolated from the cast, which is best to give the most genuine reaction to the character.
The decision to keep Nosferatu’s face hidden was the best, and hopefully they will maintain this decision when the full trailer is released. Keeping the teaser minimal, not giving too much away is great because it doesn’t spoil the film.
Robert Eggers, like every filmmaker, has his own unique and distinctive style. Eggers has taken a creatively different approach to storytelling with films like The Witch (2015) and The Lighthouse (2019), which not only build his fan base but also his legacy. Eggers has promised the film will have scares. Nosferatu is definitely up Eggers alley in his style of filmmaking.
Many people view Nosferatu as a remake of the 1922 silent German expressionist classic, with Eggers taking on the roles of writer and director. Originally, the film was supposed to team up with his The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy. Regrettably, a scheduling conflict prevented Anya Taylor-Joy from being part of the production, leading to her replacement with Lily-Rose Depp. Production took place in the Czech Republic last year.
Nosferatu will be released December 25, 2024
